House of Blackheads |
First mentioned in 1334, House of Blackheads used to be gathering and celebration place for rich citizens of Riga. In 17th century it became headquaters of Rigas Brotherhood of Blackheads. This was merchant and ship owner association in Livonia (Latvia and Estonia).
Name Blackheads derives from Saint Maurice - leader of Roman Theban legion.
The building was destroyed in 1941 by Nazis, rebuild in 1999, thus meeting lines, engaved on gate:
"If I ever collapse,
You will build me again"
/Ja man kādreiz sagrūt būs,
Mani atkal celsiet jūs/
The House of the Blackheads is located in the Town Hall Square.
